As part of our mission here at Why Daddy Drinks to revel in the humorous lunacy that is fatherhood, and to promote the drinking of quality beverages, we bring you our weekly segment highlighting something that should be in your glass. This is The Drink Of The Weekend.

This past weekend was highlighted by my victory over the broken garbage disposal that I somehow managed to replace without flooding the house or electrocuting myself in the process. The fact that this “win” came after three long trips totaling about 1,100 miles back and forth to our sometimes-weekend retreat made it all the more sweeter. I can’t wait to shove some breakfast leftovers down the sink hole the next time we get out there…Which at our current rate will be around St. Patrick’s Day 2015.

While the thought of enjoying a Cold Tall One while scrunching myself under the sink to do this job sounded like a great idea, I figured it best to hold off on mixing alcohol with plumbing, electrical outlets and a flange that, at first, I couldn’t figure out how to remove. Also, I ended up making two unexpected trips to our “local” hardware store [A total of about 60 miles of round-trip driving] and I didn’t need Ponch and Jon from the California Highway Patrol pulling me over for blasting by one of their speed traps with my kids in the backseat only to smell [one] beer on my breath.

But when the thing was plugged in and running, and nothing was leaking, it was time to celebrate. As I have said before, we don’t get out to the house as often as we would like to, especially since we had kids, even though it’s only a three-hour drive [if we don’t stop for anything] and is within spitting distance of Yosemite National Park, which remains stunning no matter how many times you go there, or how many other tourists cram in there with you. Because of this, I always bring a few beers to leave in the fridge so that I don’t have to make an emergency run to the local general store that looks like it might have sold beer to Burt Reynolds in “Deliverance”.

So, when everything was done, I opened the Beer Drawer in the fridge and cracked open a very cold, and awesome Sam Adams Boston Lager.

I have a soft spot, and a welcoming liver, for just about anything that Sam’s parent, the Boston Beer Co., puts out. Part of this is because I discovered Sam when I was living in Boston in the late 1990s. I went to Boston for graduate school and ended up working and staying there for four years. Sam Adams gets a lot of credit for being one of the first widely popular “craft beers” and you could argue that its because of Sam Adams/Boston Beer Co. that we have so many good beers today. So many in fact that there really is no excuse for lowering your taste to the levels of Coors Light, or anything else on this list.

It’s also because of the plethora of good craft beers today that it has become easy to overlook Sam. But, when I go to the grocery store or beer shop, I always check out what Sam is on the shelf or in the fridge. Sometimes it’s the Summer Ale, sometimes it’s the Winter Lager, sometimes it’s the truly great Noble Pils [Do yourself a favor and buy up whatever stock your can find of the Noble Pils when it’s available. Store it in your kid’s room, if you have to.]…But I am never disappointed with what comes out of the bottle.

And sometimes it’s the Boston Lager. Old reliable and never wrong.
