As part of our mission here at Why Daddy Drinks to revel in the humorous lunacy that is fatherhood, and to promote the drinking of quality beverages, we bring you our weekly segment highlighting something that should be in your glass. This is The Drink Of The Weekend.

I haven’t had a Drink Of The Weekend for a while, nor much else of late here, due in part to the standard, everyday, dealing-with-kids-and-house crap of life.

That, and getting fired up over the last month over My Beloved Hometown Seattle Seahawks playoff run, which culminates on Sunday with a repeat appearance in the Super Bowl, and will hopefully culminate even more with a repeat win that can be tacked on to last year’s 43-8 thrashing of the Denver Broncos. When your team is the defending Super Bowl champ, it’s hard not to get caught up in the glorious hype that is the run up to the Big Game. I think I have watched enough of the NFL Network in the last two weeks to more than recoup the extra cost that AT&T tacks onto our TV bill to carry the all-NFL, all-the-time channel.

And being that it is the Super Bowl, that most-gluttonous of American sporting events, there must also be a gluttonous amount of eating and drinking involved. I have the eating covered with a couple of pounds of chicken wings and a 4.5-pound pork shoulder that I plan on spending 12 hours on Sunday turning into pulled pork by the time the game kicks off. There are also lots of fries and chips and other cholesterol-raising snacks on hand that I plan on breaking out on what is our No. 1 unofficial national holiday.

Then, there is the beer. This is football, so beer is the drink of choice. And the choice this time mostly involves the pride of Juneau, Alaska, the Alaskan Brewing Co.

I know, I should be drinking something from Seattle. But much to my chagrin, down here in Oakland, it is hard to find many good beers from the Puget Sound region. Hell, even Washington classics like Rainier and Olympia have for years been owned by some other brewery and are made in goddamn Irwindale, Calif. these days. It’s hard to represent when the representative choices are rare.

Which is why I’m going with Alaskan and its latest variety pack. It includes the excellent Freeride American Pale Ale, it’s Amber Alt Style Ale, its crisp White Ale and the seasonal Winter Lager. A 12-pack contains three of each and should be more than enough to get through Sunday’s game. Unless the Seahawks put up another stroke-inducing performance like they did in their 28-22 overtime win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game two weeks ago. If there is a replay of that game, then that 12-pack might not be nearly enough for my psyche.

It’s said that Seattle is the gateway to Alaska. May Alaska and its beers provide the gateway to a Seattle victory in return.
