As part of our mission here at Why Daddy Drinks to revel in the humorous lunacy that is fatherhood, and to promote the drinking of quality beverages, we bring you our weekly segment highlighting something that should be in your glass. This is The Drink Of The Weekend.
I try to come up with something here on a weekly basis. And as I looked over the last few entries for this feature, I noticed a recurring theme: They all involved beer.
Not that beer is a Bad Thing. Oh yeah, there are Bad Beers [I’m looking at you, Coors Light] but you won’t read about them here. When I do write about beer, I can promise you that it will be something good, and most likely, original. I like good beer and you should, too.

But when it comes to calling something a “drink”, let’s be honest…We are usually talking about something involving booze. I am not a huge hard liquor drinker, but I do like a good cocktail from time to time. The problem with such drinks, I think, is that people are often to scared to mix something up that includes more than two items out of fear of creating a drink that’s better used for unclogging your bathroom sink drain that for sipping out on the deck on a warm Saturday afternoon. I am not immune to this feeling. I love a good gin and tonic, but all you need to make that [minus the requisite half a lime squeezed in] is right there in the title. It’s simple, but as much as enjoy a G&T, it’s not that adventurous.
So this past Saturday, I decided it was time to experiment.
I went to my liquor cabinet. The first thing I noticed is that we were out of vodka. So, no White Russians. Still, I figured I could put something together that was respectable. I rooted around for a bit, pulled a few bottles out, threw some ice in a glass and started mixing things up.
And what I pulled together is something that I have named the King Felix. I am a diehard and long-suffering Seattle Mariners fan and this year, they are playing well enough so that, if the season ended today, the M’s would be in the playoffs. [Yes, it would be with the relatively new second wild card berth, but for a team that hasn’t been in the post-season since 2001, beggars can’t be choosy. As as a fan of such a team, I’ll take them getting into the playoffs by any means necessary.]…And Mariners ace “King” Felix Hernandez is a big reason the M’s are in the race with about a month and a half left in the season.
With the Mariners taking on the Detroit Tigers in a crucial three-game series over the weekend [When the series started, Detroit led Seattle by 0.5 games for that final wild card spot. By Sunday, the M’s were up by half a game on Motor City Kittens], King Felix was on the mound for the Saturday game against the Tigers recently acquired pitching stud, David Price. There was no way I was going to miss this game, so I took my iPad outside, fired up MLB.TV, started a raging cauldron of fire in my barbecue, and prepared to create some grilling masterpieces out of a ribeye for me and a filet for my wife.
And I had a King Felix to sip while I worked the grill…And here is what you need to create your own:
1/2 oz. Gin
1/2 oz. Dark Rum
1/2 oz. Tequila
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1 oz. Simple Syrup
1 oz. Fresh squeezed lime juice
Ice
Fill remainder of glass with Coke and stir well
Lime wedge for garnish
The simple syrup, Coke and lime juice and just enough sweetness to cut the alcohol flavor and make this drink something you could easily chug if you wanted. You don’t want to do that, however. Sipping a couple of these while on the deck or in the back yard is the way to go, and you’ll appreciate them more after you’ve had one or two that way.
Unfortunately, for the first time in months, King Felix didn’t have it going for him on Saturday and he took the loss against the Tigers. Still, for 99% of this year, Felix has pitched like a king, and I raised my glass to him…And then mixed another one for me.
